Jefferson County Schools Announces Hiring of Emily Gwinn as Supervisor of Secondary Education

Jefferson County Schools is pleased to announce the hiring of Emily Gwinn as the next Supervisor of Secondary Education, effective July 1, 2026. Mrs. Gwinn will step into the position vacated by the retirement of Michelle Walker, whose years of dedicated service have greatly contributed to the success of secondary education within the district.

Mrs. Gwinn has over 20 years of experience in education, including 11 years of classroom teaching, 3 years as an Instructional Coach, and six years of administrative leadership. She currently serves as Principal of Maury Middle School, with Jefferson County Schools, a position she has held since July 2023. In her role as principal, Mrs. Gwinn has focused on creating safe, engaging, and effective learning environments, strengthening instructional practices, and fostering strong partnerships among schools, families, and the community.

Prior to her current role, Mrs. Gwinn served as Assistant Principal at Maury Middle School, Instructional Coach at Morristown East High School, and High School English Language Arts Teacher. Throughout her career, she has consistently demonstrated strong instructional leadership, including leading professional development, facilitating data analysis, supporting Professional Learning Communities, and mentoring educators.

Mrs. Gwinn’s leadership philosophy is grounded in servant leadership, with a strong emphasis on collaboration, curriculum, and communication. She is recognized for her ability to work alongside educators to support instructional improvement, implement effective teaching strategies, and use assessment data to guide decision-making. Her commitment to continuous improvement and student success aligns closely with the district’s vision for secondary education.

“I am honored to have the opportunity to serve Jefferson County Schools in this role,” Mrs. Gwinn said. “I am committed to supporting our secondary educators and administrators by strengthening instructional practices, promoting meaningful collaboration, and ensuring that data-driven decisions lead to improved outcomes for students.”

Jefferson County Schools extends sincere appreciation to Michelle Walker for her leadership and service to the district and congratulates her on her upcoming retirement. Michelle will remain in her position until December 31, allowing for a smooth transition. The district is confident that Ms. Gwinn’s experience, leadership, and dedication will continue to advance the quality of secondary education for students across Jefferson County.
